The Smoke Buddy is a neat little device that most smokers keep on hand when they need to be more discrete with weed smoke. But like a lot of cannabis tech out there, you might be wondering if it actually lives up to the hype. In this Smoke Buddy review, we’ll break down what a smoke buddy actually is, check out if it really works, explore how easy it is to use, and find out if it’s worth your money.

What is a Smoke Buddy?

A Smoke Buddy is a popular accessory used by smokers to reduce or eliminate smoke and odors. It is a small device designed to filter out the smoke exhaled while smoking, preventing it from spreading and leaving behind any noticeable weed smells. The Smoke Buddy typically consists of a plastic casing with an air filter inside. When you exhale your smoke into the device, the filter traps and neutralizes the odor particles, resulting in a much more discreet and odorless smoking experience. Basically it’s like a better-designed sploof, complete with a carbon filter that can trap and eliminate odors when you need to be more discreet with your habit.

When you check out the Smoke Buddy website, you might find yourself a little overwhelmed by all of the different size and color options out there. But have no fear. Below you can familiarize yourself with each model.

Original Smoke Buddy

The Original Smoke Buddy is the standard model and the most widely used version. It is compact, portable, and comes with a replaceable carbon filter. The Original Smoke Buddy is beloved for its effectiveness in reducing smoke and odors, as well as its durability, and the availability of replacement filters. However, some users have mentioned that the Original Smoke Buddy requires frequent filter replacements, which can add to the overall cost.

Junior Smoke Buddy

Also known as a mini smoke buddy, The Junior Smoke Buddy is a smaller version of the Original, designed for more discreet use and enhanced portability. Its compact size allows for easy concealment and transportation. It’s a great version thanks to its small and lightweight design, making it convenient for on-the-go use. However, due to its smaller size, the filter may need to be replaced more frequently, and it may not be as effective in completely eliminating larger amounts of smoke. That said, if you’re smoking a lot, you might want something bigger.

Mega Smoke Buddy

The Mega Smoke Buddy is the larger version of the Original, offering an extended lifespan and increased capacity for smoke filtration. This one is ideal if you smoke a ton of weed and take big rips that the original version may have a harder time effectively eliminating. I love it for its longer-lasting filter, which reduces the need for frequent replacements, and its ability to handle larger volumes of smoke. On the downside, the Mega Smoke Buddy is bulkier and less discreet compared to the Original or Junior versions.

Eco Smoke Buddy

Eco Smoke Buddy

The Eco Smoke Buddy is a newer addition to the Smoke Buddy lineup, marketed as an environmentally friendly option. It features a biodegradable cartridge and a more sustainable design, so it generates less harmful waste. The eco-conscious approach is a huge bonus since it reduces environmental impact and also offers effective smoke filtration. However, one potential con is that the Eco Smoke Buddy may have a higher upfront cost compared to other models.

How well does a Smoke Buddy work?

So does smoke buddy actually work? From personal experience, I can confidently say that the Smoke Buddy works quite well in reducing smoke and eliminating odors, but the kicker is that you’ve gotta use it correctly. Using it for normal puffs, I noticed a significant decrease in the amount of smoke that lingers in the air, and any burned weed smells are effectively neutralized.

However, the Smoke Buddy’s performance can absolutely vary depending on how much you abuse it. For example, light, shorter puffs tend to be easier to filter and produce less smoke overall. But when you’re blowing massive clouds into the Original or the Junior, it definitely struggles. The Mega buddy worked well for bigger hits, though.

It’s important to keep in mind that while the Smoke Buddy is effective, it might not completely eliminate the smell especially if you’re smoking a lot. However, it does make it a lot harder to notice, so if you’ve gotta be discreet it comes in clutch. It helps to smoke with a window open and a fan running to help get rid of any of the leftover smells if you’re still smelling weed through your smoke buddy and hotboxing your apartment.

It also helps to make sure you get a proper seal around the mouthpiece and exhale directly into the Smoke Buddy to make sure smoke isn’t leaking out of your mouth and not getting filtered. You’ll also need to maintain and replace those carbon filters whenever it starts to perform poorly with normal use.

What is the lifespan of a Smoke Buddy?

The Smoke Buddy is made with plastic, so they’re ultra-durable and long lasting. However, since the Smoke Buddy is designed with replaceable carbon filters, you’ll want to make sure you replace them when they start to work less effectively than usual. If you’re wondering how often you’ll need to replace the filter, we’ve broken it down for each model below.

Original Smoke Buddy

On average, the filter in the Original Smoke Buddy can last for approximately 300 puffs before it needs to be replaced.

Junior Smoke Buddy

Due to its smaller size, the filter in the Junior Smoke Buddy may need to be replaced more frequently. On average, it can last for around 150-200 puffs before requiring a replacement. This makes it ideal for shorter smoking sessions or individuals who prefer a more discreet and compact option.

Mega Smoke Buddy

The filter in the Mega Smoke Buddy can last for approximately 600 puffs, making it suitable for smokers who frequently indulge or smoke in larger quantities.

Eco Smoke Buddy

The Eco Smoke Buddy offers a similar lifespan to the Original Smoke Buddy, lasting for around 300 puffs. The main difference between the original and the eco models are the materials they’re made with. They’re roughly the same size and utilize the same filters.

Just keep in mind that at the end of the day, results might vary depending on your smoking habits. If you’re using it a lot and running bigger hits through it, you might get less life out of the filter in your Smoke Buddy.

Alternatives to the Smoke Buddy

While I personally love Smoke Buddy, there are a few other alternatives out there that you might enjoy. You can check out all of these models in our guide to the best weed smoke filters here.

  • Sploofy II: Sploofy II is an electric smoke filter with a replaceable filter. While it’s on the bulkier side, it’s a great option at the low price of $22.
  • Smoke Trap 2.0: Smoke Trap is by far the smallest and most discreet version available that contains a 3-stage HEPA filter with activated coconut and carbon. For only $23, it’s excellent for portability.
  • Philter Pocket: This tiny disposable filter is exceptionally discreet and comes with an antimicrobial filtration phase which removes bacteria and viruses. It’s great for $18, but you’ll have to throw it away after 150 puffs.
  • Eco420 Personal Air Filter: Featuring a 2-stage medical grade HEPA filter with activated carbon, this model is the most expensive at $32. However, the filters are replaceable and last a whopping 500 puffs, which is excellent for its small size.

At the end of the day, the Smoke Buddy has proven itself to be a fantastic accessory for smokers seeking a discreet and odor-free experience. With its ability to effectively reduce smoke and eliminate unwanted odors, it’s become a reliable companion for me. Seriously —  I take mine everywhere. Its convenience, portability, and ease of use make it a must-have tool for anyone looking to enjoy their smoking habit without causing disturbances or leaving behind lingering smells. So, if you’re in search of a smoke filtration device that lives up to the hype, I highly recommend giving the Smoke Buddy a try.
