There are countless ways to consume marijuana, but joints, blunts, and spliffs are probably the most popular. They’re all basically just weed cigarettes (or cigars in the case of blunts), and for many they’re the most convenient way to smoke up.

But there’s more than one way to roll a joint. Some are easier than others, and some are just downright lazy – not that that’s a bad thing.

The two best options are probably simple rolling papers and blanks (or cones). They both use the same kind of paper and hold about the same amount of pot, but the big differences are the ease and individuality with which you can make your J.

Blanks are just pre-rolled cigarettes that come without tobacco. Some are made by cigarette companies and include filters – don’t use these, as the filters can make your puffs less potent. Other blanks come with simple roaches.

Rolling papers, on the other hand, are exactly what you think they are: papers used to wrap tobacco or cannabis. They usually come in low-cost packs with dozens of papers, so this is the cheaper of the two options.

Rolling a good joint on your own takes a little practice. There are plenty of ways to get started; the pencil method and the dollar bill approach are among the simplest.

Cigarette rollers are also popular. You can get these at any head shop or tobacco outlet, along with papers, blanks, and loose-leaf tobacco. Rolling machines are pretty self-explanatory: You put herb between the two rollers, slip in a rolling paper, and roll toward yourself.

This produces a tight joint, though it may be thinner than you’d like. Rolling machines come in a variety of sizes.

So do papers. With a little practice, you can glue papers together to make a fat joint. Or you can buy super-size papers, which you should be able to find at many places that sell papers.

So which is better, papers or blanks? That all depends on what you’re aiming for.

If your concern is simplicity, blanks are definitely for you. They’re easy to fill and they’re easy to use. But if you want something more than a basic joint, papers are the best way to go. They allow you to sculpt the J you want and besides, isn’t it more fun to do it yourself?
