Sam Hurd, Sam Hurda former NFL wide receiver for the Chicago Bears (before that he was with the Dallas Cowboys), was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to drug charges.

Hurd’s troubles began in 2011 when he was arrested after buying cocaine from an undercover officer. Hurd reportedly told the officer he was part of a major drug ring that would be buying and distributing in large amounts in the future, because that’s the kind of thing you tell strangers when you’re a professional athlete. Hurd claims he never used and sold cocaine, but he was an avid marijuana smoker.

“Whatever was considered the loudest weed in California — I wanted a notch above that,” said Hurd, who would import two to 10 pounds at a time from the West Coast. “I had educated myself on different strains and potencies and growing techniques. I was very selective. It was like wine.”

He smoked “all day, every day,” when it came to high-grade marijuana. Of course, he isn’t the first player in the NFL to smoke marijuana or have problems with it, something we’ve talked about before. The video below has some more information for you.
